The Sendero del Buda (Buddha Trail), located in the Sierra de Enmedio within El Estrecho Natural Park, is one of the most unique and spiritual hiking routes in Tarifa. This trail combines nature, panoramic views, and an unexpected Buddhist sanctuary that surprises everyone who stumbles upon it.

An Unexpected Sanctuary in the Heart of Nature

The route’s name comes from a small cave decorated with Buddha statues, Tibetan prayer flags, and various offerings left by hikers, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. This altar was first established by a foreign visitor who, inspired by the peaceful surroundings, created this meditation spot in the middle of the forest.

Route Features

    • Distance: Approximately 8 km return, or 9.5 km in the circular version
  • Estimated duration: Between 3 and 3.5 hours. A shorter version of about 1 hour is also available, starting slightly uphill from the El Estrecho Natural Park Information Centre.
  • Difficulty: Moderate, with some rocky sections and moderate climbs
    • Starting point: El Estrecho Natural Park Information Point, located at km 77 on the N-340, just past La Peña campsite

Highlights Along the Way

  • Mirador de la Peña: Offers spectacular views of Los Lances beach, Valdevaqueros, Tarifa, and on clear days, the African coastline.
  • Buddha Cave: A magical spot decorated with Buddhist elements and hikers’ offerings.
  • Los Lances Wind Farm: Located atop La Peña mountain, from where you can enjoy sweeping views of the Strait of Gibraltar.

How to Get There

From Tarifa, take the N-340 road towards Algeciras. Shortly after passing Hotel 100% Fun, you’ll see a right-hand turn leading to the El Estrecho Natural Park Information Point, where you can park and begin your walk.

Practical Tips

  • Wear suitable hiking shoes and bring enough water, as there are no water sources along the route.
  • Avoid hiking during the midday hours in summer due to the heat.
  • Respect the environment: don’t leave rubbish behind and avoid disturbing the Buddha sanctuary.
  • If you bring pets, keep them under control, especially in areas with livestock.

The Buddha Trail is more than just a walk — it’s an experience that combines exercise, contemplation, and a deep connection with nature. Ideal for those seeking a moment of peace and reflection in one of Andalusia’s most beautiful landscapes.
